What's with these dramatic photographs?

A box full of photographs without the stories. Many appear to be pictures Dad took, or brought back from his experience in Europe during or after WWII ... but I never asked him about them while he was around, and now we can only guess. The little picture (below) is a link to a full size version, and if there is any text written on the back of the physical photo, it will be noted along with the picture.
