Create visual relief where the opportunity arises, use graphics to add information and to help organize information on a page.

Smaller file sizes load faster, but don't sacrifice image quality where it matters - sometimes it is appropriate to compress a file a bit less to keep it looking good.

Don't minimize your credibility by using inappropriate graphics ... sometimes less is more. That said, some interesting graphic techniques can improve the look of your graphics.
