Web Graphics - terminology

  • File size – kilobytes

  • Image size – pixels wide and high

  • File format – “compression” used to save the file for web

File size is how much disk space the file uses, image size is how much screen space the file uses. Graphics on our web pages typically cannot be wider than 450 pixels, but the smaller the file size the quicker it will load into the visitor's browser, so reducing (compressing) file sizes is important.
