A fixture of the Detroit River waterfront for all of my remembrance, the steel mill has been decommissioned for a few years. On April 7th, 2004, they scheduled the demolition of the blast furnaces.

While I took these "before" pictures and waited with a small crowd across the river from the mill, Jennifer Mitchell of the New-Herald local newspaper sat with me, and eventually quoted me in the paper when the story came out on Sunday. If you're going to play hooky from work to watch some local demolition, it's a good idea to go with your boss. Dave and I both took a little time out from work to see this.
There was a blast under each of the two furnaces, but this one never toppled.

The other tower went over gracefully, completely. First there was a flash, the smoke began to billow as we heard the blast concussion on the other side of the river, and then the tower leaned and toppled.

The smoke lingered and the spectators waited patiently for the next tower to blow up ... not realizing that the attempt had failed. Well, eventually I did go back to work.

go back to 2004
