In November of 1995 Joe Rathbun and I went to Taylor Orchids in Monroe and I bought a phalaenopsis plant that had already set a flower spike and subsequently bloomed for several months.

And then, for all the intervening years, it grew larger and larger ... and never bloomed.

This winter, for some reason, it saw fit to send up another spike - and here is one of the blooms - 4" across and likely to last for months.
Another surprising flower, blooming in the front garden, this lily which, I'd swear, I moved from the other side of the garden, it is the offspring of a yellow lily called "Lotus" ... but here it is blooming quite white, with marvelous red dots in it's throat ... I can't quite figure where it has come from.
