Other
than taking
up the carpet
and the tack
strips, there
wasn't much
to prepare
before the
floor re-finishing.
After the
floors have
been done
you can see
that they
were successful
in choosing
a stain color
that worked
well with
the baseboards
and the fireplace.
I pulled the
doors off
the fireplace
in order to
clean the
bricks, but
couldn't reach
the cleaning
supplies which
are in the
kitchen, along
with the dining
room set and
the couch
and the mattress
and box springs
and about
700 square
feet of green
shag carpet

| Standing
with my back
against the
east dining
room wall, looking
toward the living
room - you can
see the aged
and discolored
varnish on the
floor between
the rooms and
along the edges
of the rooms.
In addition
to sanding and
staining and
two coats of
polyurethane,
there were several
sizable patches
of boards that
needed to be
replaced - vestiges
of the old cold
air returns
on the floor.

| After
refinishing.

 |
| And
again, the floor
before (above),
and after (below). |

|
Upstairs,
I removed
the shoe molding
(quarter round,
I'm not sure
if there is
a difference
in terminology)
in preparation
for the sanding. |
 |
| After
the work, there
was significant
dusting and
cleaning to
do. Replacing
the molding
will come later.
Perhaps I will
move in first. |
