I've decided to take the built-in dresser out of the east bedroom and build a bookcase in that spot. So with the pry bar, hammer, and perseverance I pull it apart as much as possible without taking the wall down.

When it's done there is the original plaster wall with its pretty subdued wallpaper.

Nest, I draw up a plan, figuring how big must it be to fit within the space, and figure out the method to build it sturdy and usable.

The guys at Mans were very helpful, helping me choose the right kind of wood, checking (more or less) that I've figured properly, picking out the best screws for assembly, and generally not being discouraging. They cut squarely to my specifications.
I used the drawers I'd pulled out of the dresser as saw-horses or paint stands, carefully painting both sides with primer, although one side of the case and back will be fixed to the walls.

I assembled the sides and top first, then the shelves and bottom, careful to drive the screws in straight, so they won't break the surface of the wood.

Turns out that the space is not square. The floor is not level. After attaching the back I'll need to affix the case to the stand, and leveling the entire case at that point will be tricky.

I patted myself on the back for not trying to exactly fill the space - I'll fill the gaps with more shims and run some more screws through the bookcase and into the 2x4s that hold the wall.

Getting the molding to fit was more of a challenge ... here it is propped around the bookcase. It wasn't cut exactly square, but even if it had been it wouldn't have fit perfectly, as the walls are also not quite even ...

It's as done as it can be for now. The molding it attached and the few gaps are filled. Iron-on veneer has been fixed to the front edges of the shelves. I think it looks good and it's very solid. At some point I'll need to have the baseboard cut to fit for the bottom, and there's some filling that needs to be done along the top where the wall wobbles.

It's good.
