Jane Roxbury (my father's grandmother) was 16 years old when she had Rachel - here, in 1897, Rachel is two, Ada is a baby, and Jane is 18.
In 1899, Rachel (my paternal grandmother) is four. Her sister Ada is about two.
This picture was probably taken around 1912 - Rachel is 16 years older than June, who appears to be at least one year old in this picture, and Rachel was born in 1895. The sisters are Rachel, Ada, Leona, and June.
A man used to visit the neighborhood with a pony, an assistant, and a camera, taking pictures for a fee. You might notice that this pony has either six legs, or, more likely, the assistant's legs can be seen behind the pony. There would be no value in losing the little patron over the pony's side.
The timeless charm of the tricycle.
I was once told that this portrait was taken when Denny was three.
